Your eyes are itching, your nose is running and you can't seem to quit sneezing. That's right folks, we are a couple months into allergy season. Not everyone knows our struggle, but those who do know what a pain this time of year can be in our lives. We typically try to mask the symptoms with allergy medications, half of which make us extremely drowsy, and others just don’t seem to get the job done. Year after year these allergy medications begin to make a dent in our wallets. Claritin costs about $16.74 at Walmart for 30 tablets before tax. Depending on how often you are taking them, (typically 1-2 a day), they begin to add up. At this point, allergies have become a burden on not only our health, but our financial stability as well.
So what are allergies really? They are one of the most common chronic diseases there are. An allergy occurs when the immune system identifies a substance as harmful and overreacts to it. After the body develops or recognizes an allergy, it begins to make an antibody called immunoglobulin E. These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction. The medical approach to allergies has neglected to progress to this day. Orthodox medicine has no cure for allergies, only treatment for symptoms. Because the common symptoms of allergies are caused by histamines, antihistamines are commonly prescribed to dry mucus membranes. However, antihistamines are linked to heart problems and should not be used with alcohol, tranquilizers or sedatives. It is also possible for steroidal nasal sprays to damage the cilia in the nose and upper respiratory tract and affect the adrenal gland.
So what are our options for alternative care? Chiropractic care, although not a treatment for allergies, has been recognized for helping several cases. The chiropractic approach is to locate and correct a type of spinal and nervous system stressor called a subluxation. By releasing stress on the nervous system, chiropractic allows the immune system to function more effectively. This is crucial for common allergy sufferers. When your body is functioning at a healthy and optimal level, it is capable of neutralizing toxic substances like allergens. So rather than masking these symptoms with expensive drugs that do not have the means to cure the issue at hand, emphasize building a healthy body and strong immune system. We owe it to ourselves to minimize the struggle of allergy season, and to find any means in our path to health and wellness.
